Glasgow Caledonian University is the first in the UK to offer a complete, integrated module on 3D Internet Virtual Worlds, teaching students all components involved in this relatively new branch of internet design and multi media.
When 'The Internet' (or HTML) got released some 2 decades back, nobody could teach you how to create web pages, when multi media authoring tools got developed nobody could teach you how to design a decent User Interface and so on. Technological innovations always precede coherent teaching about them, innovators and early adaptors just have to self teach by trial and error, inventing and painting the wheel as they go.
Glasgow Caledonian University is already pioneering the use of this innovative technology in learning and teaching and recognises that it is becoming increasingly popular, so we are delighted to be the first in the UK to offer an integrated course in developing virtual worlds. The new module will integrate all elements involved in hosting, managing and creating virtual real estate and user interactivity, ensuring our students are at the forefront of technology and are fully equipped with the skills they will need in future.
3D Internet Virtual Worlds is open to fourth-year students and will be taught in lectures and in practical workshops.
The university has already created a replica campus on Second Life where students can, for example, work with virtual patients in a virtual hospital ward to hone their nursing skills, access virtual X-ray equipment, meet tutors, showcase their designs and prospective students can chat to mentors online to find out more about student life. Future Second Life projects will, for example, allow visual sciences students to explore the human eye by 'going inside' a virtual eye and learning to diagnose visual problems. Other modules will allow students to establish virtual businesses.
