Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy 2008-2015

In line with the Glasgow Caledonian University 2015 Vision we are committed to working in partnership with staff, students, employers and the community to develop an accessible, dynamic and flexible environment for learning and teaching. We will develop graduates with the appropriate attributes to meet the complex demands of the modern workplace, and to take their place as independent lifelong learners in a knowledge-based, global economy. This will be achieved through an innovative curriculum which takes a student-centred approach to developing the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes required of civic minded, employable graduates. The curriculum will be informed by the needs of employers and based on cutting edge educational research. The activity associated with our Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy 2008-2015 will raise the University’s profile and involvement in learning, teaching and research around the world.

The distinctive student journey at GCU is characterised not only by our commitment to excellence in learning, teaching and research, but also by the provision of high quality, tailored support and guidance to students from diverse backgrounds. We will promote social inclusion and social justice, embracing diversity and respect for others. Our students will be encouraged to gain the confidence, communication and leadership skills which will allow them to achieve their maximum potential.

Introduction

The overarching theme of Glasgow Caledonian University’s mission is a commitment “to the common weal” (the term “the common weal” or common wealth comes from the old meaning of “wealth” which is well being.  The term literally means “the common well-being”). As noted in the GCU Mission this means that we will use our skills, facilities and knowledge to make a positive contribution to society. This approach permeates all aspects of the university’s business and no more so than in learning and teaching. Through innovative curricula enhanced by curiosity-driven applied research, designed and delivered by highly skilled, reflective and creative staff we seek to engage students in the joy of learning. We aim to provide a high quality, inclusive and flexible learning and teaching environment which makes the best use of technology enhanced learning, creating a bold, innovative and distinctive approach. This moves us away from a perception of students as consumers of knowledge and towards students as partners in the development of knowledge, thus preparing them to become confident, problem solving graduates who are able to make a positive contribution to society.

To achieve this vision our LTAS is framed around three key goals which build on previous successes in providing a supported, but challenging environment designed to assist students from diverse backgrounds and cultures to achieve their aspirations.

Goal 1: To equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to operate as flexible, independent lifelong learners

Goal 2: To build students’ competencies in the skills demanded by employers in a global knowledge economy

Goal 3: To develop and embed innovative and relevant learning and teaching based on sound research and scholarship
