Clinical Education

Clinical placements are important elements of our undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy programmes.

Undergraduate clinical placements

For undergraduates, one third of the BSc(Hons) Physiotherapy is made up of clinical placements that take place in Years 2, 3 and 4. You will work as part of a team alongside other health professionals, under the tuition of practising physiotherapists. Placements can take place in hospital physiotherapy departments, intensive care units, cardiac rehabilitation units and in the community. You will treat physically impaired patients or those in recovery from a variety of illnesses.

In addition students have the chance to arrange one elective placement to explore an area of your choice. Our students have had placements with sports teams and NGOs, and have travelled to places such as Hawaii, New Zealand, Vietnam and Africa.

Postgraduate clinical placements

Students taking our MSc Physiotherapy will have clinical placements in Years 1 and 2. Over 1,000 hours of clinical time in seven different placements allow you to practice and develop your skills and knowledge in the clinical environment. These placements cover all core areas of physiotherapy as well as a wide variety of other specialities such as paediatrics, sports, falls prevention, community care and occupational health.  Placements are mainly within a 30-mile radius of the University.

Postgraduate students can also choose to arrange an elective placement abroad or in an area that interests you.
